I’ve been asked what the best advice is to help prevent a friend from becoming a self-destructive alcoholic, a teacher from becoming a student in a classroom full of children, or a person from becoming a victim of crime. The answer is “micah’s law”. The idea is that the more you give yourself permission to change, the more you will be able to.

In our first example, I said “to prevent a friend from becoming a self-destructive alcoholic.” Here’s what I meant: I don’t think I can become a self-destructive alcoholic. I know I can stay sober but I don’t think I can get drunk so I think I could be a drunk. It’s not that I’m lazy it’s just that I don’t think I can change. If I did I think I would have been a better person.

Micah is like most people who have a problem with alcohol. He hates it, so like most people who hate alcohol he doesnt really want it. The one thing he does want is to drink it. So the more he gives himself permission to drink, the more he will be able to drink. The problem, of course, is that most people dont give themselves permission to do anything. You can become lazy by watching too much TV and then not giving yourself enough permission to start watching TV.

The problem is that micah has an even bigger problem. He has a problem that most people dont have: he wants to drink. So much so that he is willing to do anything to get drunk. He wants to get drunk for the exact same reasons that almost everyone else wants to get drunk.

I’ve always hated it when people say “I want to get drunk for the same reason that almost everyone else wants to get drunk.” Because the actual reasons why people want to get drunk are far more interesting and compelling and far less trivial and boring than the general idea that getting drunk is for no good reason at all. Most of the characters in the film are so young that the idea that they don’t get drunk is completely bogus. The fact that they’re so young is no justification for them being drunk.
