At first glance this is a rather odd blog. It appears to be an online diary of the lives of a group of artists and writers. But then you realize that this is exactly how you write a blog. This is not a diary about your life, or the lives of others. It is a journal of the art and craft of being a writer.
I think the first thing I’d have to do is tell you a little bit about my life, which is quite boring. I used to live in England, in an old house that I had to sell, with an artist friend who has a studio on the top floor of my house and lives there with our two dogs. I think it’s a very pleasant house, and I’m quite happy. But it’s not very practical to live there.
I mean, that’s not exactly a bad thing. The trouble is, a lot of people have a lot of interest in being writers and artists but don’t have much of a life experience.
You see, the problem is that most people don’t know how to write a sentence. It’s like writing a sentence. Many people will say, “I write short stories” and then try to fill in the blanks in with “I write short stories.” This isn’t a good way of thinking through things. If you don’t know how to write a sentence (and you don’t have a lot of experience in that area), you’ll end up writing things that aren’t very good.
In one of our recent surveys, we asked over 100 people what they write. The majority of those people wrote short stories, a handful wrote novels, and only two wrote creative nonfiction. Of those two, one was a writer of literary fiction and the other was a writer of narrative nonfiction. All of our surveys showed that writing short stories leads to less satisfaction, and worse writing, than writing novels. This is because short stories are more easily manipulated by readers.
The reason short stories are more easily manipulated by readers is a result of the fact that short stories are less complex in the story and thus easier to manipulate. Of course, this doesn’t mean that short stories just aren’t that great. It does mean that short stories aren’t nearly as creative as novels. A short story is a set of ideas that will not only give a better read than a novel, but will be much easier to make.
