In The Handmaid’s Tale, the government of the United States was founded by the daughters of slaves. When the daughters of slaves are murdered by the government, the government’s first action is to turn all the slaves to the public library at a young age and provide them with books about the world (like the ones in the books in the original film). The government then turns all the books they have from the library into the public library.
In most cases, the original film never talks about this, but The Handmaids Tale does show the government coming to the library with the girls and making them sign agreements about what they can and can’t read. It doesn’t actually explain what they have to do with it, but the point is that they have control over the girls’ minds even before they are born. In other words, they aren’t just turning slave girls into books.
Like many other things with the show, the details are a little fuzzy, but the gist would seem to be that once the government puts them in the public library, they have no idea what they are signing away. And if they do, they dont like what theyve got to sign, so they are forced to do it. The girls will be pregnant before they realise this, but it is implied that by having no idea they are pregnant, they have no idea what they are doing.
I’m not sure I’d call what the government does to these girls “impregnating,” but the way they are put into the library is pretty much the definition of rape. The girls will be forced to sign on the day of their wedding, and at the wedding they will have to sign away their future, but they will have no idea of what they are signing away, they will have no idea that they are pregnant, and they will have no idea they are signing away their future.
It’s all a bit much, isn’t it? Just as you are about to walk out of a library and have no idea what you are signing away, someone asks for your consent to have sex with you. It’s a pretty extreme reaction to a situation that many of us wouldn’t expect. Of course, in real life, nobody is asking us for our consent to have sex with them.

People often think they are in an abusive relationship when they are really not. Being a woman in a relationship where you are constantly being told what to do and how to do it is not that uncommon. But when you are not in a relationship with a man who demands the same of you, it is. Many women in this situation who come off as abusive are in fact not.
You don’t know you are pregnant when your mother is telling you you are. But you are already pregnant, so you have no choice. You need to have sex. Or so you think. The truth is, you probably have no idea. You are going to start bleeding, and you will most likely experience cramps, nausea, and pain.
As a teenager I was a very promiscuous person. I was in the habit of having sex with other women before the age of 15. I did what I was told to do and I paid for it with my health. But that was because I was in an abusive relationship. I was an addict, and I was being abused. I was forced to have sex and I did. I went to college and was a part of a drug-addled cult.
