It’s official, the 2016 labor law changes are finally here. Our labor laws will no longer be the same as they were when I first moved to Oregon. Labor laws are supposed to be neutral laws that have nothing to do with race, sex, age, or disability.
I love that they’re going to eliminate the sex discrimination, age discrimination, disability discrimination, and race discrimination laws that we had in Oregon. Instead, they will all be about the same thing: the ability to work. So the only difference will be that we can’t hire older workers or people with certain disabilities, because all of that discrimination is gone.
Oregon is actually one of the first states to adopt these new law, so it’s not like you’re going to run into a lot of people of color making fun of you for getting jobs you can’t find.
Oh, and in case you’re wondering, all Oregon workers under 16 can already work. They just choose not to, because they have to wait until they turn 18 before they can sign their first paid job contract.
So this new law is really good, but it isn’t the only thing it has going for it. The other thing is that you can sign up for a new state-mandated health plan. That will make your health care coverage more affordable, and it will also save you a ton of money if you have a family. I think a lot of people in Oregon are going to be excited about this.
The new law will also make it easier for people who aren’t in school to get health insurance. Under the old law, if you weren’t in school, you had to wait until your 16th birthday to sign up for health insurance. Now you can sign up for your first health plan right after turning 16. If you’re in school, you can take the course and learn the entire coverage before you sign up.
It’s great for low-income families because now they can get health insurance without having to wait. If you have a good job, your kids will be able to get their health insurance without having to wait too much. That’s awesome.

This makes sense because when you are uninsured you don’t have to be afraid to get sick. On the other hand, when your kids have insurance, then you can pay for them to go to the doctor and not worry so much about when they’ll go back.
